Challenges Ahead for National Conference: Can They Deliver on Their Promises?

The recent assembly election results in Jammu and Kashmir have brought the National Conference (NC) back to power, securing a significant majority in the Kashmir region. With 42 seats, alongside its alliance partner Congress, which won 6 seats, NC has emerged as the dominant political force in the Union Territory. This victory, however, presents a unique set of challenges for NC and its leader, Omar Abdullah, particularly given the high expectations tied to their key promises of restoring Article 370, Article 35A, and statehood.

A Mandate Based on Dignity, Not Development

In this election, the people of Jammu and Kashmir largely rejected the development-driven narrative propagated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other like-minded parties. Instead, they rallied behind NC, which campaigned on promises of restoring autonomy and dignity through the reinstatement of Article 370 and 35A. These articles were central to the special status of Jammu and Kashmir before being abrogated by the BJP-led central government in 2019.

NC’s electoral success, particularly in Kashmir, signals a deep-seated desire among the electorate to reclaim the political identity and autonomy they feel has been eroded. Voters chose NC, not just for its governance track record, but for the hope it offered in reversing the central government’s actions. However, this is where the challenges begin.

The Reality: A Tough Road Ahead for NC

While NC has managed to mobilize significant support on the promise of restoring autonomy, the path to fulfilling these promises is fraught with challenges—primarily because the political and legal framework of Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory leaves little room for regional parties to exert meaningful influence on such issues.

NC’s key promises—bringing back Article 370 and 35A and restoring statehood—are constitutional matters that require the approval of the central government. With the BJP firmly in power at the center and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) appointed by the central government, NC’s ability to act independently is severely constrained. The governance model for Jammu and Kashmir, as a Union Territory, operates similarly to that of Delhi, where key decisions are ultimately controlled by the central government.

This political reality makes it highly improbable for NC to deliver on its promises, at least in the near future. The restoration of Article 370 and 35A would require significant legal and political maneuvering, and with the BJP being the architect of their abrogation, there is little chance of cooperation from the center.

The Risk of PDP’s Fate: History Repeating Itself?

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), once a strong contender in Jammu and Kashmir politics, saw its decline after aligning with the BJP in 2014. This alliance, seen as a betrayal by its core voters, particularly in Kashmir, has significantly eroded its base, as reflected in its dismal performance in the recent elections, securing only three seats.

NC could face a similar fate if it fails to deliver on its promises. The party’s majority rests on the belief that it will restore Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. If, over the course of its tenure, NC is unable to fulfill these pledges, voters may turn against them in future elections, just as they did with PDP. The risk for NC is not just electoral defeat, but the loss of its identity as the party of autonomy and dignity.

Omar Abdullah’s recent statement that he will “keep the Article 370 issue alive” reflects the challenge ahead. If NC is unable to tangibly deliver, repeating the same promises in the next election may not suffice. Voters, particularly in Kashmir, are likely to grow weary of what they perceive as empty rhetoric.

The Future of Jammu and Kashmir’s Politics

Should NC fail to meet voter expectations, a political vacuum could emerge, offering opportunities for smaller regional parties like the Apni Party, People’s Conference, and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP). These parties, though smaller in stature, may capitalize on disillusionment with NC’s leadership, especially if they offer a pragmatic approach to governance and development.

Development-oriented parties, which failed to resonate with voters this time, could see a resurgence if NC’s promises of autonomy and statehood fail to materialize. This could also lead to the rise of newer political movements that address the immediate needs of the people, such as infrastructure, employment, and social welfare, rather than focusing on issues of autonomy and political identity.

Conclusion: A Ticking Clock for NC

National Conference has a limited window to prove its worth to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The emotional appeal of Article 370 and statehood may have worked this time, but in the next election, it is unlikely that voters will be satisfied with symbolic gestures or unfulfilled promises. Omar Abdullah and his party face the tough task of balancing political rhetoric with the harsh realities of governance under a Union Territory framework.

Failing to deliver could see NC facing the same wrath that befell PDP, and the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s politics may once again shift toward development and pragmatic governance rather than autonomy and identity. The stakes for NC could not be higher: the next election may well be the one that determines whether the party remains a dominant force in Jammu and Kashmir or fades into political irrelevance.

Religious and scientific benefits of dates

Prior to 10-15 days, Muslims start preparations to welcome the much revered and blessed month of Ramadan. From bringing food items to cleaning homes, Muslims across the globe wait 11 months to welcome the ninth month of the Islamic calendar which is called 'Ramadan'. The holy month of Ramadan is expected to start on March 23 and run through April ending this year in India according to the Gregorian calendar. Islam is spread all over the world and Muslims from different corners of the world usually prepare traditional and tasty foods according to their region and ethnicity during this holy month. But, what is served everywhere across the globe on the tablecloth (Dastarkhwan) during Iftaar timings are dates.

Yes, dates are served everywhere during Ramadan and almost every country with a small or big ratio of Muslim population imports dates from Arabian or Middle Eastern countries prior to Ramadan. Do you know why dates are consumed in huge quantities during Ramadan and why Muslims prefer to break fast with dates only? Maybe you might be aware of religious reasons but there are plenty of scientific reasons behind them too. Scroll down to know more.

Religious Importance

Dates are mentioned in religious books like Torah, (Tawart), Talmud and Quran. The one religious reason why Muslim prefer to take dates during Ramadan is that prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stressed on the consumption of dates, especially during Ramadan. The prophet confirmed the importance of dates when he addressed, '' Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, and said: ''O Aishah, a house in which there are no dates, its people will go hungry.'' ( Saheeh Muslim).

Dates are regarded as the fruit which brings health and prosperity.  Almighty Allah has mentioned the importance of dates in various places in the Holy Quran. You can read chapters of the Holy Quran like 14 verse number 34(Surah Ibrahim), chapter 16 verse number 11 (Surah Al-Nahl) and Chapter 19 verse numbers 25 and 26 ( Surah Maryam)  among others which highlight the importance of dates.

The prince of poets, Ahmad Shawqi once said concerning the date palm:  It is the food of the poor, the sweetmeat of the rich and the provision of travellers and strangers.

Health Benefits

Dates are rich in nutritional substances like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
The prophet (PBUH) said, '' The best of your dates is Al-Burni; it takes away sickness and there is no sickness in it.(Al-Tibb).'' Dates help to reduce weight, get rid of anaemia, boost immunity against cancer, and help to strengthen bones and teeth. The dates help to increase libido as they contain phosphorus and calcium.

Dates are beneficial for eyesight and help to strengthen the auditory nerves. The fruit is also regarded as a remedy for liver disease, jaundice, dry lips, dry skin and cracked nails because it contains vitamin B.  They are also beneficial for the stomach and bladder and are regarded as a laxative and remedy for constipation.

Dates and Poison

Al-Bukhari and Muslim  narrated in their Saheehain, '' It was narrated that Saad, may Allah be pleased with him, said, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, '' The one who eats seven 'Ajwah dates every morning will not be harmed that day by poison or witchcraft.''
Actually, the sugar of Ajwah dates gets absorbed quickly and is stored in the liver after we take the fruit.

Nutritional Value

Caption: Nutritional Value Of Dates Per 100 Gram

Briefly, the main benefits of dates are that they are rich in nutrients, contain antioxidants, act as natural sweeteners, promote heart health, and support digestive health.

Grenade Mode "On" Again In Kashmir

Grenade mode on again in Kashmir
When anyone says word ''Paradise'' in front of you maybe you will think of lush green meadows, flowers who are in full bloom, gurgling streams, freshwater lakes, dense forests, chirping of birds, privacy and secrecy , fresh aquatic winds, aromas of lavender flowers and musk deers, soul soothing breeze, snow capped mountains, etc etc, but when someone refers ''Kashmir'' as ''Paradise'', case is contrasting.
This is the place which possesses all the elements of Paradise but painted in ''Red''. Subtle slopes that seem to  overlap in the horizons, shadows of chinars, fast flowing Jhelum, simplicity of people ,frozen springs and almost everything which provides contentment and calmness to any human being is in Kashmir but unfortunately painted with red. Everything is painted with blood stains. Every Kashmiri has become the victim of bloodshed and in this post-enlightenment period where billions of people claim that they are educated enough and believe in 'live and let live' mantra there is a gross violation of human rights across the globe. Kashmir is one of the places in the word where innocent people suffer without any reason. Those who are Pro-Indian or Pro-Pakistani had fully involved themselves in the battle but those who  have little acquaintance with mainstream politicians or separatists or any Pak operated terror group or Indian Army are suffering without any reason. Common man in Kashmir has become the sandwich for both Indian and Pakistani supporters and are worst hit because of the rift between the two. Everyone is claiming Kashmir as its own territory and carrying out operations against each other on this piece of Paradise. But no one is asking what a common 'Kashmiri'' wants?  One of the worst things Kashmiris are facing is uneven grenade attacks on crowds. Whoever is doing it ,it is totally a wrong act.I ask them if you don't have potential to fight face to face then surrender but do not attack innocents. Common man doesn't want bloodshed at all.
I recall the time when these grenade attacks were at its peak from the mid 90's to around 2013. There is a holy shrine of Hazrat Abu Bakar Sidiq (RA) at my village and my parents and country men often narrate the incident  of grenade attack in our village which took place on the day of Urs of Hazrat A Syedna Abu Bakar Sidiq (RA). People were just celebrating the festival and miscreants lobbed grenade on innocent people in which few people died and several were injured. One among the injured was my another cousin brother and according to my mother , my cousin and brother escaped narrowly when we were around 8-9 years old. My mother narrates that i screamed for an ice cream which a non local vendor was selling and fortunately we were far from him at that time when i insisted my mother to bring an icecream for me. She said that ''I was holding the hand of your cousin brother and you was in my lap and suddenly you saw a Bihari (usually used for non local labourers in Kashmir)selling 'malayi walli ice-cream'' and you started screaming for it. I went towards the seller along with both of you. When i reached close to him for buying ice cream , blast occurred. We were barely 5 meters away from him and his head got beheaded and i saw blood everywhere. Shouts and screams haunted me .  I saw your another cousin screaming for help. I started weeping and left the venue. I was searching for someone who will help your cousin brother who received abdominal injuries. I left you and your cousin brother at the entrance of our colony and went back to help your injured cousin brother'', she recalled. It was a very heart wrenching story and it was not only one. Another incident happened where me and my parents too narrowly escaped at Sopore , when I was ill. That story is so horrible that I don't want to even share that experience. Parents of Kashmir face tonnes of hardship to bring up their kids. Terrorism has led to trepidation among residents of Kashmir.
When I passed intermediate i wanted to pursue B A in Travel and Tourism but it was offered at Sopore college where most of the grenade attacks used to occur at that time, so i preferred to to complete my degree at Baramulla college instead. Every Kashmir has almost suffered in most of the ways from these grenade attacks and even these attacks changed the fate and lives of many innocent people. But fortunately since the past decade graphs of these uneven grenade attacks went below mark and I was happy as at least one way of massacring innocents stopped but since the beginning of 2022 , it has again started with a higher fatality rate than of late 90's and early 20's . Government should introspect and activate intelligence agencies so that this kind of mishaps are prevented. It kills every Kashmiri within. History should not repeat in that way . Every Kashmiri wants to erase the bad distressing memories of late 90's and early 20's. Everyone is condemning the cowardly acts of hurling grenades but no one seems willing to bring policies and alternatives through which these attacks can be stopped. Stop the blame game and start acting instead. This way of carnage  and butchery is wreaking havoc among Kashmiris.

Let's revive 'Kashmiriyat

Kashmir's composite culture needs amelioration as the paradise has lost camaraderie which was existing within its inhabitants. People here  used to live with brotherhood, emity and harmony . Most of the rulers ill-treated people but they showcased resistance and patience. Until the end of Dogra Raj, people suffered due to  poverty and cruelty of rulers but harmony was never affected. The word secularism was not known to the Kashmiris then but ''Kashmiriyat'' was what they believed in.

Kashmiriyat means helping everyone and living peacefully. They did not used to ask for anyone's caste, creed, sex, religion or race. The mantra was to just keep helping others. Prem Nath Bazaz and Sheikh Abdullah fought for the cause of political freedom unitedly he was Hindu and later Muslim. Everyone was proud of being Kashmiri and part of its rich culture. Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim ruled this peice of paradise for own ends while as subjects suffered till mid 19s. After the accession of the instrument was signed , Kashmir became a part of India . Still there was communal harmony and everyone irrespective of their religion used to think about Kashmir. But what happened after 1990, Kashmir became the hot topic . Bilateral issues between India and Pakistan were hit and dispute was even raised in UNO.

I don't know who casts an evil eye on Kashmir but I can say that Kashmiriyat was muddled over the night. The centuries old tradition and affinity was found broken and it took enemies of the ideology of Kashmiriyat to hatch a conspiracy against its rich culture for only a few weeks. Pandits left Kashmir. They left their neighbours, temples, homes, friends and properties.  The issue gained political mileage but I will not share it here as I consider politics responsible for the exodus of Pandits. If Kashmir would have not awakened politically, people might have been still destitute but atleast love and harmony would have been not affected. Political consciousness has brought an end to Kashmiriyat. It has destroyed peace and tranquility. I would blame Muslims who have not stopped Pandiths that time and at the same time I would blame those pandiths who left their native places instead of attaining martyrdom. This is what patriotism is. Wheather, you get killed or suppressed but you will still never leave your motherland.

Pandits were rehabilitated later but how they spend these 32 years is an inspiration for everyone. They  lost everything. They have been cheated and deceived by every politician since then. Pandiths are being used as a vote bank by every political leader. They were highly educated but left in distress. They want to settle back in Kashmir and Kashmiri Muslims want to receive them with warm hearts but, I retriate that politics has destroyed Kashmiriyat, so, it seems impossible till politicians have influence over both the Hindus and Muslims.  Poor Pandiths suffered when they used to live in tents across India and abroad. In Jammu, where most pandiths still live, they used to shelter themselves under narrow sheds made of steel sheets. Both, male and female used to share the same toilet until Manmohan Singh led government,  a decade ago sanctioned government residential quarters to them. But, I salute Pandiths, who still have Kashmiriyat in them and who still carry the rich culture along with them despite being deceived by  a section of Kashmiris. I know they will not blame all Kashmiri Muslims as they still recall the love and faith they had within them. Those who tried to ruin our culture and age old demography got little success as love has revived again between Pandits and Muslims but only one thing needs to be improved and  that is communal harmony.

Hearth used to be Kashmiris second sacred festival after Eid. People irrespective of religion were celebrating both festivals with religious fervour. Kashmiri Muslim still believe that on Hareth it will rain and that belief is belief of Kashmir not Hindus or Muslims. Hindus still visit Holy shrines across Kashmir and pay obeisance. I recall my experience that I recently met a Pandith , who frequently used to chant '' Dastgeera Sahaba Yaari'' means Oh! Dastgeer protect me and ''Ya Gousul Azam  Dastgeer'' means Oh! Dastgeer, the  helper of everyone ''. (Dastgeer Sahib in Kashmir is used to refer to renowned Islamic scholar Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani).

When I contacted various Pandiths on this festival to convey good wishes , everyone replied with a heavy heart. Everyone wants to celebrate this festival in Kashmir with Kashmiri Muslims and enjoy the blessings of Lord Shiva, which usually comes in the form of rain. I urge and appeal every Kashmiri, Muslim and Pandiths to protect Kashmiri culture and don't fall in the trap of politicians. Let's together make Kashmir and its culture an inspiration for everyone.  On this Mahashivratri ,let's marry Kashmir with Kashmiriyat again

Greta Thunberg

America Against Activist

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg lashed out on leaders at World Economic Forum at Davos by saying that we can't pay someone else for planting trees in Africa while at the same time forests like Amazone are burning. She criticised Trump administration's climate record track in response to what U S president said ' She beat me out on Time Magazine, as she was named the person of the year 2019.
It does'nt stop here , Trump's  treasury secrertary  Steven Mnuchin also took a dig at activist on Thursday.
During a news conference Mnuchin said that Thunberg should go to collage and study economics first then advice and teach us what and how to do.
Mnuchin came in the defense of Trump and  said that Trump administration wants clean air , water and environment.
Alongside warning the leaders at Davos  about the catastrophe of climate change Thunberg also appealed leaders to devist  from fossil fuels.
She stressed that we should do something for environment rightnow instead of in  2050,  2030 or even in 2021. She warned of the aftermath and bad consequences during the programme.
She completed her speech by asking leaders that they might think'' we are inexperienced, but if they won’t do it, they must be accountable to next generation  and tell them why they have given up on the Paris Agreement goals, and knowingly created a climate crisis.

Women safety on Internet

With the advent of internet there came a significant paradigm shift in the dissemination of information , modes of communication , knowledge gaining process and human relationship. In this post -enlightenment period where we work for feminism and gender equality ,we see women are harrassed online and due to the fear of harrassment most abandon has abandon surfing internet. Internet is helping us getting socially closer to eachother but harrassments reported has created a gap in newly constructed model of socialization.
According to research by Amnesty International surveying more than 4,000 women "more than one in five women have experienced online harassment or abuse". This report does'nt suggest any women to stray away from social media platforms and diverge form the fast and cheap medium, but it suggests how many women don't know their rights.
So to stay tangled and attached with the internet , know the laws which will help you:
IT Act 2000
The act defines cyber crimes and prescribes penalties for them.

Section 66E of the act deals with "publishing private images of others" and if a person captures, transmits or publishes images of a person's private parts without his/her consent or knowledge can get imprisonment up to three years, or/and with fine up to 200,000.

Section 67 of the act defines "publishing information which is obscene in electronic form" and if a person publishes or transmits or causes to be published in the electronic form, any material which is lascivious or appeals to the prurient interest or if its effect is such as to tend to deprave and corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it can get imprisonment up to five years, or/and with fine up to 1,000,000.

Section 67A defines "publishing images containing sexual acts and if  a person publishes or transmits images containing a sexual explicit act or conduct may get Imprisonment up to seven years, or/and with fine up to 1,000,000.

In 2008,section 66A was introduced by amending IT Act 2000.It penalized sending of "offensive messages". Provisions addressing voyeurism were also introduced in 2008 amendment.
So you should not retreat from using internet and if someone is harrassing you , you can lodge an FIR at any cyber police station and culprit will be punished and penalized as per law.
